Right Question?

My daughter comes back home from school informing me her teacher left her in class while others went out to play. I asked her, “what did you do?” She said she didn’t finish her food. On another occasion Nugie came back from an outing to report that she was denied a treat and I asked again “what did you do?” I thought that was the best or fair way to ask whenever something happens to them which wont make me biased. While asking “what did you do?” the question kept echoing over and over in my head and I realized I […]

who wants to move my cheese?

After teaching my daughter a lesson on unconditional love, (Read it here) I heard her often telling me, her father or anyone who displeases her: “You are no longer my friend.” I decided to investigate. “Tori, you should not withhold your friendship because people don’t do things your way, it’s not right.” Then she replied, “Mummy, but Peter (her classmate) always says it to me in school.” Now, this is where the issue lies, the school is filled with different children, different homes and upbringing. All my good intentions and teachings may not be agreed with, aside that, there are those […]

Spare the rod…what rod?

Proverbs 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go and when he’s old, he will not depart from it. How do we foster independence in our children, helping them become confident adults? What’s wrong with kids doing house chores and picking up after themselves? Instead of parents or house helps doing everything for them because we want to save time, “help” them or we don’t want to trouble them. What’s wrong with holiday jobs or skill learning in place of holiday lessons? Do they really need that holiday lessons? Why is a child working considered suffering or degrading […]

My Monopoly? yours? whose?

I came to the room to meet Tori and Nugie playing with their brother. I saw that all the buttons on his pin-up was undone, and the weather was cold. “Why did you unbutton his shirt,” I scolded as I buttoned him up, they kept quiet till I finished my rant. Then Tori spoke up, “but Mummy, you removed it yourself before you went to the kitchen.” Apparently I had unbuttoned him with the intention of changing him but forgot. I was nonplussed and didn’t know how to bluff my way out, I just had to apologize to them. I […]

Handling toddlers…

I hear often, people saying, “don’t shout at your children, talk to them, explain, they will take correction and learn more.” I listen to them and think, maybe they are not from my planet or they may have taken something to make them immune to their children’s antics. I remember when I tried the explanation method: Me: Tori and Nugie you shouldn’t do that girls:why? Me: (trying to explain)Because bla bla bla… Girls: Why? I kept explaining and the “why” kept coming till I forgot what I was trying to correct in the first place. I can shout, I know […]

Is the excuse really valid…?

I have had too many excuses to give… one day while trying to explain why something will not work; I realized if I continue on this lane I will only be mediocre at best. Sometimes we don’t even know we are becoming a pro at giving excuses, becoming good at defending why we should continually be marking time and never moving forward. We all have the most part to play in our success. Next time we want to give a ‘valid reason’ we should as ourselves, Is this really valid or an excuse to be excused? This poem came from […]

My Dreams and God’s will

When I met my husband, he was the opposite of all I dreamed of in a man: the only thing he had going for him then was that he is tall. I dreamed of big and brawny but he was slim and lanky, I always wanted a language different from mine, so my children will be polyglot but he came not only from my state but my hometown, I wanted a different church but he attended my family church e.t.c. All these as far as I was concerned disqualified him. But before I totally disqualified him, I went to ask […]

Bullying

While in school I was bullied, it was hard and bad. I suffered physically and mentally. I was angry at myself for taking it because some of my mates resisted being bullied but I stayed, soaking it all up like a sponge and I hated my bully, she made sure she extinguished every form of self-esteem I had and any optimistic bone in my body. I didn’t even know how much I was affected until I woke up crying from the same consistent dream ten years later. I prayed and did everything I knew to do but the dream persisted till […]

Absence and Couples

Due to better job opportunities, further education for better prospect and different legit reason or the other, couples are now living apart. There is weekend, monthly, in-between, yearly (different category) husbands. I don’t like it a bit, but what can I do-sacrifice today for a better tomorrow. When ever my husband lives, it seems the light has been switched off in my home, the children will mope around for the first two days(I mope too but it’s the children we are talking about), they keep asking: “Is daddy on his way? Why did he go? When is he coming? I keep […]

Suddy Move

I was giving Tori and Nugie a bath; I told Tori to close her eyes while I washed her face, her sister was also given the same instruction. Usually, when I tell them to shut their eyes, they always ask if it was okay to open their eyes. After using the washcloth on Nugie’s face, I told her to open her eyes and she did but Tori assumed since I told her sister to open her eyes, then it was okay to open hers as well. Wrong move! what she didn’t realize was, there was soapsuds close to her eyes […]
