Mothers Bullying Mothers

I have three children under the age of four and most times it’s overwhelming, especially as a young couple trying to find their feet with children up to their usual shenanigans; tagging along wherever you go, holding onto you, preferring to be on the particular chair where you are sitting. Whew! It’s a whole lot to take in and handle without help and believe me when I tell you I don’t get it right most times. Which takes me to the reason for this piece; some mothers got no chill, like seriously? Motherhood is not a competition; also children are […]

Checks, Right and Wrong

My colleague told me a story that made me sit and rethink my laziness towards obeying the Holy Spirit through the inner check in my spirit. According to him a couple in his hometown on way to the market with their toddlers (twins, boy and girl) had an accident in the middle of the river and their boat capsized. The man and his wife were seasoned swimmers; each took a child and tried swimming the long distance to shore with one hand (the children being toddlers could not hold on to their parents, hence swimming with one hand). The man […]

Mine…or not?

I wanted going to the office briefly, but didn’t want the hassle of driving, so decided to board a tricycle instead. I knew how much it costs to take a tricycle from the house to my destination, so I knew what I was waiting for. Within two to three minutes of standing there, about six to seven tricycles passed, some were full, those that were not full I flagged down and told them my destination with how much I was willing to pay to make sure we were on the same page. They were calling a price above the appropriate […]

Good Job

Having little beings (children) to take care of and who look up to me ain’t easy because I don’t have all the answers, what I fail? What if I am too hard on them? What if…? What if…? These thoughts buzz through my head most times but I do not have the time to sit and let them weigh me down. I learnt early enough from books and speakers that criticism and negativity only fosters low self-esteem, so I try to encourage my children as much as I can, even when I am busy or tired and they are like: […]

Chores…Laundry…More

My most dreaded house chore is spreading out clothes, I can manage to live through doing laundry but please don’t ask me to spread them. I counted the clothes these children wore in a week, because no matter how much I wash, they just keep multiplying and the number was a hundred and ten, in ONE week! I think I have some invisible visitors who put in their clothes when am not watching. My trusty washing machine knob tired of the incessant turning, has given up on me. I was flirting with stylishly throwing some clothes away, maybe I should […]

Spilled

After clearing up for the night, I was already seeing my bed calling out to my weary bones. Samuel who had refused to sleep was hungry. I wearily went to pour out the remaining oat inwardly thanking God that I still have little already prepared. I added the milk, on lifting the cup to his lips it slipped and poured. This poem was what I wrote to cool my head as I went into automatic overdrive. I called it   SPILLED He sits down with a string of pearl Hitting the floor click clack Into his mouth it goes Down […]

basking in mediocrity

Basking in Mediocrity

I have been asking God some questions lately because I have been noticing an up and down movement in my life. Going through my Instagram, I came across Chinonso Ogbogu of The Incubators Africa’s post on mediocrity, according to him: “So many young entrepreneurs are feasting in the banquet of mediocrity. We dance in sheer mediocrity. While encouraged by the growing cheers of those who seem not to know any better. We get locked in people’s praises that eventually we stop growing-we simply plateau. That’s dangerous! Mediocrity can be a five-star prison that can comfortably keep us locked in nothingness…” […]

Purpose

I heard of an argument why parents should/shouldn’t choose courses/career for their children…some children are fortunate enough to know what they want almost from birth, so a parent choosing may not be appropriate in that case but what of those who have no clue. I didn’t know what I wanted to study or be. Every time my father asks me I always said something different; I wanted international relations because it sounded exotic, to be a pilot because I always wanted to travel the world, business administration because my Aunty was studying it. English was the last course I called […]

Anger at God

My first pregnancy, I came across a book, “supernatural childbirth” which is basically talking about getting pregnant, carrying the pregnancy, delivering the baby all without stress and complications. It also discussed delivery without pain…this I was interested in because I always wondered if Eve was cursed in childbirth and Jesus came to liberate us from every curse, then we are not suppose to be experiencing pains or trouble in childbirth right? Whenever I spoke about this to people, they just gave me this blank stare, so I learnt to shut up and keep my opinions to myself. Well…when I came […]

Missed Calls

I sent Tori to get my phone from my bag, she refused, so I sent Nugie instead who ran to bring it. Tori on seeing her sister bringing the phone, starts crying because she has changed her mind. I gave Nugie a thank you hug with a high-five. Tori cried harder because she wanted the Thank you from mummy. I had to look for something else to send for so she could get a thank you too, she didn’t want something else, she wanted to bring the phone but when she realized that wasn’t feasible, she settled for getting something […]
